About Mekhann & Our Craftsmanship
Brand heritage, craftsmanship and exclusivity.
A word of Turkish: Mekân, Arabic: Makān (مكان), Persian: Makān (مکان) origin meaning "place" or "space." It refers to a specific location or setting, often used to describe a physical or conceptual area where activities or events occur.
By incorporating the sound and essence of "mekân," the name "Mekhann" signifies a unique place where artisanship and cultural heritage meet.
Our core production principles, the quality of materials used, and the time dedicated to design distinguish Mekhann from all other brands in the high-end textile industry. Our one-of-a-kind products come to life with attention to detail, crafted to be kept for generations.
Our products are designed in-house in London, where our creatives and collaborators conceptualise and develop each unique piece. Production takes place in Turkey, where we use traditional Suzani embroidery with the chain-stitch technique, following strong sensibilities of craftsmanship.
Our artisans, with whom we have been collaborating for many years across various regions of Turkey and Central Asia, use tambour hooks to create their embroidery.

Yes, the fabrics we use are entirely handwoven, the threads fully hand-dyed, and the embroidery meticulously handcrafted.
No two pieces are ever truly identical. Additionally, each piece must be started and completed by the same artisan. Otherwise, even if the same tools and techniques are used, the natural variations in individual craftsmanship could lead to subtle differences within a single piece.
Carrying a depth, artistry, and human touch machines can never replicate, hand-embroidered textiles reflect time, dedication, and individuality in every stitch.
The simplest reason Mekhann focuses on this is longevity, creating pieces that add value to the world we live in and become more cherished over time. In textiles, the most enduring way to achieve this is by continuing to apply 2,000-year-old techniques in the modern era.
This varies, but it mainly depends on the complexity of the design and the amount of hand embroidery involved. Considering that the smallest piece we produce is 45x45 cm (18x18 inches), the embroidery work alone takes, on average, 6 to 8 days to complete.
Product lead times vary depending on the nature of the piece, whether it is being produced for the first time or follows a theme artisans have worked on before.Naturally, larger or more intricate designs take significantly longer.
Dedication, precision, and patience. Every piece is created with care, never rushed. With over 15 years of working with the same artisans, the expertise we have built allows us to maintain the highest level of craftsmanship.
Envisioning designs that inspire us and that we believe we can enhance and develop is where it all begins. The actual design process starts once we have confidence in the historical, artistic, and cultural significance of the collection we aim to create.
For further information please visit our Design Page.
Every piece and design we bring to life is always anchored in its historical essence (technique, design and material). What we add is an unexpected touch, traditional motifs reimagined through bold, unconventional colour palettes, seamlessly adapted to both modern and classical interiors.
Materials, Ethics & Brand Values
Sustainability, material sourcing, and dyeing process.
We endeavour to use the highest quality silk available when producing Mekhann products. The predominant material is mulberry silk, which we use in the ground fabrics for embroidered surfaces and their threads. We source this silk from internationally recognised suppliers who have been practising sustainable and ethical production methods for many years.
We choose natural materials like silk for their rich textures, durability, and ability to age beautifully. Unlike synthetic fabrics, which can degrade over time, our textiles are selected for both longevity and responsible craftsmanship.
How a textile feels, lasts, and changes over time all comes down to the materials. Silk, when woven with care, holds its strength, softens beautifully, and resists wear. \
Every piece is made to endure, ensuring less need for replacement and more reason to cherish it.
To achieve the colours we use in our weaving and embroidery threads, we produce traditional natural dyes using plants, vegetables, fruit roots, and very high-quality non-industrial sources. The natural dye technique (dating back 2 millennia) is environmentally friendly and free of harmful chemicals.
Natural dyes develop depth over time, creating tones that shift beautifully. Unlike synthetic dyes, which rely on chemical stabilisers, our plant-based pigments are applied using time-honoured methods that minimise environmental impact.
Yes, slight variations in tone are natural in hand-dyed textiles. They are not imperfections but a result of the artisanal dyeing process, making each piece unique.
In limited batches, we produce focusing on thoughtful, intentional creation rather than overproduction.Offcuts are repurposed, and our traditional dyeing process reduces water waste compared to chemical dyeing methods.
Speed doesn’t define craftsmanship. Care, skill, and tradition do. We work with master artisans, time-honoured techniques and thoughtfully chosen materials, ensuring every piece respects both its maker and the world it belongs to.
Yes, our textiles are made from silk and natural fibres, which break down over time without leaving harmful waste. Unlike synthetics that release microplastics, our fabrics contain no synthetic blends, allowing them to decompose more naturally
Because true luxury lasts. Mekhann pieces are made to be treasured, not replaced, embracing a slower, more thoughtful approach that values quality over quantity and minimises waste.
