Frequently Asked Questions

Brand Essence

A word of Turkish: Mekân, Arabic: Makān (مكان), Persian: Makān (مکان) origin meaning "place" or "space." It refers to a specific location or setting, often used to describe a physical or conceptual area where activities or events occur.

By incorporating the sound and essence of "mekân," the name "Mekhann" signifies a unique place where artisanship and cultural heritage meet.

Our products are designed in-house in London, where our creatives and collaborators conceptualise and develop each unique piece. We produce using the traditional chain-stitch embroidery technique, following strong sensibilities of craftsmanship.

Our artisans, with whom we have been collaborating for many years across various regions of Turkey, use tambour hooks when creating their embroidery.

Envisioning designs that inspire us and that we believe we can enhance and develop is where it all begins. The actual design process starts once we have confidence in the historical, artistic, and cultural significance of the collection we aim to create.

We endeavour to use the highest quality threads available when producing Mekhann products. The predominant material is mulberry silk, which we  use in the ground fabrics for embroidered surfaces and their yarns. We source this silk from internationally recognised suppliers who have been practising sustainable and ethical production methods for many years.

To achieve the colours we use in our weaving and embroidery yarns, we produce traditional natural dyes using plants, vegetables, fruit roots, and other organic sources. The natural dye technique(dating back 2 millenia) is environmentally friendly and free of harmful chemicals.

Our core production principles, the quality of materials used, and the time dedicated to design distinguish Mekhann from all other brands in the high-end textile industry. Our one-of-a-kind products come to life with attention to detail, crafted to be kept for generations.
